District Kishtwar in the past used to be an independent hill principality. The area was named after "Kishat Rishi" who lived here. The district boosts of exquisite natural beauty as well as rich heritage. While Kishtwar have changed hands and subsequently it's name from time to time, the origin of this tiny bit of paradise can be tracked back to the ancient times. The region was gifted to the founder of Mehta family who was the Commander-in-Chief of the Kashmir Army by the king of Kashmir.
